Defrag Simulator

The grid is a fake hard drive: blue blocks are fragmented file clusters, red ones are unmovable system files, and white space is free. Press Start and the simulated defragmenter reads scattered clusters (green flash), writes them into place (yellow flash), and slowly turns the drive into a tidy cyan wall of optimized data, front-loaded just like the real thing.

The Speed slider goes from authentic-1996 slow to suspiciously fast. New Disk rolls a freshly fragmented drive so you can do it all over again.

Real defragmenters rearranged file clusters so the disk head could read files without seeking all over the platter. SSDs made the whole ritual obsolete; the hypnotic block animation, sadly, went with it. This is its retirement home.
